Obama Administration Yanks Second Amendment Rights from SSI Recipients

Last week, the Obama administration put the finishing touches on a new policy that would deprive recipients of disability insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) of their Second Amendment rights. The administration will now characterize those citizens as “mental defectives,” thereby having their ability to own a firearm subject to the federal Gun Control Act.

Supplemental Security Income helps blind, disabled, and elderly people with little to no income. Previously, it was understood that “mentally defective” referred to one’s mental health. Citizens who have been institutionalized against their will are restricted from owning a firearm. The new definition of “mentally defective” has nothing to do with being mentally ill.

I picked up a .44 magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk in Nov. and a 16 ga. TriStar Hunter EX in Dec. with leftover cash from my Social Security payment. Maybe I’ll do this every month just for the irony……………………….

Yes! I recently invested an entire month’s SS payment in a new Burris XRT II 5-25 scope with SCR Mil reticle. It’s swell!
Thanks for the ‘free’ money, Obama!

and the ACLU and the AARP will be right on that one!

    wait…it’s about guns?

    NEVERMIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. anonymous says:

Who is the judge of ‘mental defective’ anyway ? Whomever it is, two can play that game.

People who are afraid of inanimate objects (firearms) and force others to accommodate them so they can feel more comfortable. Mentally defective.

    No SSI for you!

And so on and so on …

  5. The link is broken, so I can’t read the whole piece, but what is written here is a bit of scare mongering.
The way the regulation is written it is not a blanket ban on people getting SSI or disability. You have to be getting them for a “listed mental condition” AND you have to get your benefits sent to a receiver who handles your finances for you.

They did this with the VA as well where vets who got their checks sent in care of a 3rd party were listed on the No Buy list.

Say you are kicked in the head by a mule and start drooling on yourself. If your disability check is sent to “Miss Lisa on the behalf of Wirecutter”, then you are on the list. If your check is sent to “Wirecutter” then things are fine for now.

I am not saying we should not be working to roll this and the VA ban back, but that first paragraph is very misleading.

    • Padawan says:

It used to be that children who suffered the death of a parent could collect SSI. (I’m not sure if it was under certain circumstances or not.) I’m not sure if that’s still the case but under this “rule” that probably puts said child on a “no buy” list and they’re not even old enough to buy one yet.

      • Children draw a SS survivor’s benefit upon the death of a parent. They also draw a check if the parent is disabled. My daughter gets a monthly check due to my disability, it pays for her Christian school tuition. I think the payments stop at age 18, so they are unable to legally buy a firearm anyway. Nothing to stop you from gifting them one though.

    Trump will fix it.

  8. CC says:

Since there is no one in the bureaucracy competent enough to make that judgement, I’m going to ignore it.

    • Elmo says:

10-4. There’s nothing quite like the mentally defective sitting in judgement of who is mentally defective.

    • ChuckN says:

“Since there is no one in the bureaucracy competent.”

      There, fixed it for you.
