Typical draft horse. I’m no horse guy, but this beast appears to be about 18 or 20 hands at the shoulder.

I was gonna say 18 hands which would be 6 feet. Big horse. I cleaned stables for an 18 hand jumper many years ago when I was muuch younger and he was big. Nothing like this horse size wise but he was a tall horse. Jack Of Diamonds. Cool horse.

probably a stud with a stud fee in the $50,000 range.

Wow. Them’s some tiny little peeples.

Looks like a Percheron. My neighbor has two, they are brothers and their names are Cain and Able

You’re right! he’s the Percheron champion of the world! 19 hands 76 inches at the withers.

Dammit all. I told you more than you wanted to know about Freisans.

Looks like the horses the Amish in Ohio have for pulling hay wagons or plows or whatever they need to have pulled.
I’ve seen the Amish use horses to pull cars and trucks out of ditches in winter.
Saw ’em pull a tow truck out of a median on a state highway – along with the car that the tow truck got stuck trying to pull out.

Or maybe the people are just really short?

The Amish in my county over here on the west side of the state use Belgians as work horses for the most part. Big horses as well, every now and then a team will get spooked by a car & run right over the top of the vehicle. It ain’t pretty when they do that…

Dad used to have a mare marked like that ,though she was no where near that height. He sold her along with the “fancy” buggy & sleigh he had.

    I love the heavy horses.

  7. bogsidebunny says:

Think about having to “muck-out” the stable that nag lives in.

  8. fjord says:

It’s a Freisan. A large one. Most of the 15-16 hand horses are used as sport and show horses (dressage). The Queen (of England) rides Freisians. Bareback.

The heavier draft type Freisians can be used for work purposes, but they are pricey. In the US they are usually cross bred with other gaited breeds for a nice carriage horse, usually a standardbred or a morgan. They usually have feathering on the feet and are almost always black. (some can have a brown base).

Most of your black draft horses used by the Amish are called ‘grade drafts’. (mutts)
The gaited breeds are super smooth riders and can pull a carriage for hours. They are also used in English jumping.

This guy is most likely a stallion. If he’s shoed, they are probably as large as dinnerplates.

    What a truly magnificent creature!

    Mom looks hot.

    Spectacular! Thanks, WC.

He’s a big gun. I’d up the ante to18-22 hands. Had a Lippizan Stallion, Andalusian Gray stood 18 hands on a good day, but not quite if this pic is accurate.

Stomp the dog shit out of possums and coons stealing feed at night. Pushed my damn fence down with nothing but his chest after a mare in season. Took 6 men, and my hysterical Mom to break that one up.

Good times as a kid. Never a dull moment.

  13. I wonder what they taste like with bbq sauce.

  14. Sanders says:

Looks like the Percherons the Albuquerque Police Dept. uses for its mounted unit. I knew a guy who was one of the founders of the mounted patrol, and they went with the draft horse because of the calm disposition. His kid was in 4H with mine.

He told me a story of when they were cross-training with the Border Patrol. They’d be chasing someone through the desert and the smaller BP Quarter Horses would weave in and out of the brush, but the Percherons would just jump right over or bulldoze through in a straight line. I guess they scared the hell out of the wetbacks, too – those giant black horses. The illegals hate the mounted patrols because they can’t hear them coming like they can trucks or ATVs.

If your comment 'disappears', don't trip - it went to my trash folder and I will restore it when I moderate.
