    Very cool! P40 flying tiger.

Sorry to be picky, but the artist has the sharkeye placement wrong and the retracted landing gear I believe is shown wrong as well, the aft section looks more like a P 51 Mustang.

    Props not bent.
    Wings intact.
    No wave damage.
Was it just gently lowered to the sea bed?

Looks more like a P51 Mustang. P40 only had three prop blades and no bubble canopy. AVG was not the only unit to use the sharks mouth. Still, very cool picture—professional courtesy. One hunter paying respects to another.

Definitely a P-51D. It’s just the paint job fooling the brain into a very familiar icon. Most P-51Ds were left in bare aluminum to save weight and by the late war, we didn’t need to hide. :)

  8. The thing that told me right off that it was not a P-40 was the lack of the air scoop on top of the engine cowling and the other was the distinct tail feathers of a P51 with the squared off top of the vertical stab. and the small stabilizer fin that was added to increase lateral stability.

P51-D with shark nose art…not uncommon
