The Last of the Finest

Four years ago on a bright warm 4th of July morning in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood I went to my local coffee purveyor on the corner to get my usual. As usual I got in line. In front of me was an American-Asian family with two little girls, a Lesbian couple I’d seen around, a young girl and boy who looked like they were just coming home from a long date’s night, a blond woman with her blond daughter, a Hispanic looking man with a toddler asleep in a stroller, and, of course, me, your average white guy.

Just Damn. I met a Tuskegee Air Man several years ago at the Reno Air Races. It was an honor to shake his hand. I belonged to Toastmasters while in college, one of the members was a the youngest B17 pilot in WWII. Twice blest to meet great men, not to mention my uncle’s who served in WWII as well as my grandfather in the Great War, giants all. I also met great people who served in Korea and Viet Jam, giants too, but forgotten.

Geez, a landing boat operator. Talk about stones. Standing above the hull where you would be seen by the enemy with nothing more than a plywood console between you and them, going over reefs, mines, sharks, reefs, mines, more sharks.

Well, at least the view was good.

That is the second vet I have heard about or talked to that was at Kwajalein. Wow.

Wisco, that is beautiful. I got a tear in my eye as my Dad was one of those brave men. Happy Birthday America.

It’s good to hear from someone happy with the way things are in their life now.As much as you think ‘the good old days’ were better, they were your todays that you worked through and if you’re honest with yourself they were just as hard or just as good as now.Good luck sailor.
