In George Orwell’s 1984, the oppressive rulers of Oceania use devices called telescreens to closely monitor and repress citizens. Now Facebook looks set to follow in the Party’s footsteps by putting its own firm’s microphones and cameras into people’s homes. The social network is planning to release its first ever piece of consumer hardware which will be called Portal and cost a whopping $499 (£368), a website called Cheddar has claimed.

    Had trouble finding this solitary article on Google search. I’m not saying facebook isn’t developing it but it’s being kept under cyber wraps.

    I don’t use any social media. I think it’s more insidious and more dangerous than the various nerve agents in the possession of ISIS.

    I refuse to have any active internet spy-device in my home. Not an Alexa, or whatever. Not even an internet-connected device except for my computer, which I take off-web when I am done farting around with it.

    With all of the reports in the tech media of these devices constantly listening to the goings on in the place where they’re installed and transmitting what ever they hear to the business the device was purchased from why would anyone want to have one in their home and pay for the privilege to boot?
