    Sometimes I look at projects like this and think to myself, is it worth it? That original picture was horrible. Let that thing die a good death. I’m sure you can buy for a comparable cost, one that’s already done. But I guess if you enjoy the work, wrenching and “artistry” that goes with this type of restoration then more power to you. But I could think of 351 thousand things I would rather do with my time and money. To each his own.

    As a kid working in a maintenance department of a poultry processing plant, one of the old-timers commented about the stories being told in the break room. “If them cars was so good they’d still be makin’ ’em. When we was runnin’ liquor if you got up to 60 you’d think you was flyin’.”.

      There is more to life than worrying what other people think, but if you give a shit about that get into a beautifully restored classic or chopped custom vehicle or bike and take a ride. That ” expensive pos ” will turn heads, get you high fives and looks of appreciation that no modern car will.
      As to your mini van comment, we both know you’re full of shit on that one so there’s no need to go there..

    Back in 94 I bought a decent rolling chassis with a very rough body, rusted out cowls, fender wells and floor pans, of a 66 Mustang coupe . After 3 years of going thru the orginal 289 and auto transmission, running gears and brakes. Redoing the interior, body work, tires and a good coat of primer I had a very nice 80% correct driver, all in for 14k.
    Lucky for me I met a guy through the Mobile Bay Mustang Club that had redone several cars, he had the tools and shop to work on it. He was a walking encyclopedia on those cars and offerd his help and shop, no charges except to chip in on the utilities. He had a project car going on at the same time so we helped each other out, thanks Mustang John I couldn’t have done it without you.
    Paint never got done by me but estimates in 97 – 98 were in the 3k + range for an period correct paint and color.
    I was getting divorced in 2000 and had no place to keep it anymore so I sold it to MJ for 17k. He offered me more but I felt he had already paid me much more in his help so..

  7. Would depend on if he did the work or if he is in the industry too. I would also like to know what he dropped into it cause that hood scoop could be for show or maybe not. Either way nice car and if that scoop ain’t just for looks I would place it up against any vehicle made in the USA today. He wasn’t going for the full original look so there is no telling what that girl is packin.

      I agree, it’s not a restoration so he could be using the old 351C or W, maybe the R-code Boss 351, or 400. I saw a Mach 1 earlier this year with a warmed up 460 that would take both front wheels off the ground for the 1st 50 ft or so before the cheater shot.

      We bought some furniture from a couple in a very wealthy suburb of Nashville a couple weeks ago and the guy had a 10 year old Vette in the garage. We got to talking about it and he said he had either a ’61 or ’62 Vette (I don’t remember which) that he wanted to restore but found out the job was going to cost him in the neighborhood of $120,000 to have it done.
      He said fuck that and sold it, then bought the one he has now.

    A couple of years ago I had a buddy that finished a ’65 rolling chassis that was in a lot better shape than what is on the trailer. He turned his into at GT350R clone for about $22k above the price of the car. He did most of the work himself but farmed out a few things. It took him about 3 years.

    That was his third restoration and he is now working on a 1972 F-100 pickup. He has stretched the cab and is putting it on a 95 F-250 frame. He has been working on this one about a year.

    I saw the original post on reddit. The guy and (I think) his father in law did all the work. He’s running a 351 Windsor engine. It was all done over about 4 years if I remember correctly, and total cost around 16k. He replaced as many parts as possible through boneyards and swap meets, buying new or reproduction parts as little as he could manage. They even did the paint. I’m a Camaro guy myself, but that’s one gorgeous ride, and a helluva good story.

    One thing I do know through experience with my 35 Chev, everytime you get some one else to put a spanner on your car, they see you coming and add shit loads. I call it a vintage tax, or the price of having an old classic I guess.

    Everyone has a passion. One may not know what their passion is, still searching for it, or may have just neglected it while living the daily routine of normal life. While I am the worst mechanic, and cannot afford a project such as restoration of a classic car; however, I can appreciate someone else’s passion and a reborn work of art.

    In ’78 my Dad was in his 18th year of military service, and I went to stay with him during the summer. He was always talking about his projects of buying, selling, and trading vehicles, or anything he could turn a profit on. I was 13 and just flew for my first time from backwoods LA, to backwoods GA. I was figuring it was going to as boring as where I had just come from, but my Dad surprised me after we got to his house when he showed me he was restoring a ’67 Vette. He would work on that thing a little everyday and more on weekends and tell me about the importance of original parts, but he never asked me to help. Summer was coming to an end and he finally asked if I would help him pull the cylinders out of the block which was on the other side of the garage. I said sure, and while he was hunched over the engine compartment doing something, I pulled 2 cylinders out rather easy. The third one did not want to come out so I moved to the next one. Easily done once again. The other 3 would not budge. After trying various ways to get those damn things out I decided a hammer would do the trick. Plink plink bang! Plink plink bang. Plink plink…. What the fuck are you doing????? I heard my dad yell at me and grab my arm before I could whack it again. All I could hear was Dad telling me go away. Go away. Go inside. Don’t touch a damn thing and don’t come near the car again.

    I found out that my Dad’s passion was having original parts when at all possible. Minus a couple cylinders. You know I still feel bad about that, but I had no clue the importance of original parts and pieces. Needless to say it took him nearly 30 years to ask me to help him with another vehicle project. And it wound up being brake line maintenance and repair on some old GMC flatbed truck and he only had me pump the brake while he found the exact leaking spot.

    Find your passion, enjoy life, but don’t bang on cylinders with metal hammers.

    My 22 year old F-350 diesel has over 500,000 miles on it. It still runs, but there is wear on lots of parts. I figure that I can have the suspension repaired, the 7.3 diesel engine replaced and maybe a new and different tranny installed for far less than anything new would cost me.
