    Ah, a kaiten.

  2. John Mars says:

Are midget subs actually crewed by midgets?

    • Wirecutter says:

      Close – Japanese.

    • Butch says:

Yeah, you can see them in that picture coming out of the sub near the back end. They are the same species of Japanese who clean those tiny little shrimp that are just 1/8 of an inch long. Well, maybe the shrimp are a little longer, say 3/8’s inch?

  3. Jack says:

A good read about the “forgotten war” in the Aleutian Islands during WW2

  4. Gryphon says:

Crazy-Brave Midgets… First Shots Fired between U.S. & Japan was one of these Engaging a U.S. Destroyer outside of Pearl Harbor – Sub was found a few Years ago with a Shell Hole through the Conning Tower – and the Captain.

I have a picture of myself sitting in that sub in 1982 while I was involved in a salmon survey with Alaska Fish & Game.
