Do hogs really eat deer?

A picture surfaced years ago on Facebook of a wild hog holding a dead fawn in the clasps of its mouth. It raised a lot of questions, and led us down a path of research, conjecture, and assumption. What kind of an impact can they actually have on wild deer herds?

Yep, hog will eat anything. One of the reasons they were considered unclean for the Jews to eat is because they ate anything they come up on. Like catfish, shrimp, lobster, oysters, etc. All good eating.

My understanding is that, as desert people (originally), the Jews massed near available water in oasis type locales. Hogs demolish water by wading in it, crapping in it and adding all sorts of turbidity. Hence, Hebrew aversion to hogs. Quite understandable.

      • Dranin says:

An additional prohibition for hogs with nomadic people is you can’t herd them. Goats, sheep, cows, even geese can be moved i a group over open ground but hogs are a special kind of a-hole so if you e tribe has to move to the next valley and your resource is hogs you lose most ofthem, or have to leave them behind it be left behind. All of which is disruptive to tribe cohesion.

Hogs also carry a huge number of parasites which if the meat is under cooked can result in serious problems including death.

That’s the usual story told PlanKTon, but it isn’t historically accurate. The Jews were not desert people, they were grasslands people who herded flocks. They didn’t really enter the deserts at all, until four centuries after Jacob’s son Joseph’s death in Egypt, about 3300 years ago. And the land of Israel didn’t begin to turn to desert until much later, about 1700-1800 years ago. Before that, springs and small creeks were abundant. In drier areas, they got much of their water from digging wells, rather than from oases. It is recorded that Abraham and Isaac were already digging wells, about 3800-3900 years ago, long before the practice was widespread in that region.

Hogs, hell ever live back up in the hills (we had hot and cold running water at the kitchen sink, no indoor bathroom) So there is an out house. Lot to understand about a functioning out house, you don’t put an out house over a pit leave it on flat. Old sow have piglets keep them in a pen you going butcher em in the fall anyway so you wanta keep the meat kinda clean. let 2,3 shoats run the property, when the out house starts to look bad just open the back of it up, you’ll know them. Come next spring you will sell them down at the sale barn. I hate wild hogs especially the razorbackish type they will hurt you, and the meat ain’t any good any how. So fuck shot em for target practice

    Yes. Next question.

I think I saw a movie or a cop show about people using hogs to get rid of bodies of people they had killed ?? The cops ended up finding pieces of finger bones or something in the hog pen?

If I remember right, the hogs couldn’t digest the teeth and they used dental records to name the victims.

I call BS. There’s nothing left in the hog pen but excess fixed nitrogen…

“It was something Irwin Mann said this morning. I had a lot on my mind and it didn’t register. Now it doesn’t make any sense. I’m sure I heard him correctly, though; his accent’s not that heavy. It was when I asked him if he really did have business to attend to in Missouri.”
      “What did he say?”
“He said yes. He said he had to go feed his hogs.”

My grandma talked about the neighbors toddler who went missing and they found a little shoe with a foot in it inside the hog pen. The father shot all the hogs and buried them. This was in the 20’s

One of the leading causes of non-illness childhood death before 3yoa in medieval times was ‘free range’ hogs snuffling up Junior.

I agree, here in Texas, they will grab any animal they can get. My friend who is a rancher says they will grab goats. He is a kill them and let them lay kind of guy.

  8. Sabre22 says:

Yes Hogs will eat anything. Back in the 60’s Peter Capstick went to Argentina to shoot birds and there was a hog at the ranch he was staying at that was eating sheep. it is a pretty good story so I will et him tell it.

Only thing I saw that a hog wouldn’t eat was orange peel. But that sow was very well fed.

They say in the southern Texas brush, many illegal aliens who die will become food. Vultures, coyotes and yes – even wild hog. Nothing goes to waste – one way or the other, it gets consumed.

  10. Drew in Michigan says:

A hog must have protein in its diet and it will get it one way or another, we used to keep hogs and goats together (even during kidding season) never had a problem. We kept their feed at about 20-22% protein, no worries.

If feral pigs find cattle trapped in deep mud surrounding a water hole, hungry boars just slit open the belly flank and stick their whole head inside to get at the best juicy bits. That the poor cattle beast is still alive is no business of the pig. Old Ma Nature is a bitch.

Play nice.
