Yeah, I think I’ll pass on the ram balls

Take a look outside. Are you in Iceland? Now take a look at your calendar. Is it Þorri—the coldest and most brutal month of the year, which stretches from late January to late February?

If the answer to both of these questions is yes, the time is ripe for a Þorrablót—a feast that calls for piles of smoked lamb, endless Brennivín, and a variety of other delicacies, including sour rams’ testicles.

    I sampled “Rocky Mountain Oysters” once back in the day when I was in Denver at some cowboy themed restaurant there whose name I can’t remember. They came on sampler platter of appetizers we had ordered. Didn’t care for them.

    ‘Nuts and Tails’. Sometimes available at Basque restaurants here in the sheep country of California during lambing season. Not my thing either. Sort of a novelty.

    I grew up on a ranch. At branding time it was a big deal to throw the testicles of calves on the branding iron stove, fry them up and eat them. I think it was a macho competition between the ranchers. :) Ick. Never tried them, never will. They also used to fry them up with scrambled eggs.

    so I’m guessing this is a “that one won’t make it till spring. I guess we better eat ’em now” sort of thing?
