I hated it when you stopped your Saturday posts. Not so much anymore. Three freaking Gif dumps and two history links on a Friday that tides me over until your Sunday posts.

  2. John Wilder says:

I have finally seen a practical use for a pony, other than to bite and scare neighborhood children.

  3. Butch says:

#4 is an impressive rock drill…but why?

    • Robert says:

Probably for drilling holes to either use a chisel to separate slabs of rock or to insert charges to blast. It was better than doing it with a sledge and drill by hand ( two people, one to hold and one to strike).

Do you remember the story of John Henry vs. the steam drill?
This is a step between hand drilling and steam powered drilling.

The toilet thing is called a tamping charge. Water is an incompressible fluid. A small explosion applies a large force because the water transfers all the energy to the adjacent solid where air acts as a shock absorber. This is how depth charges work too. We use this in mining by boring a hole, placing a small charge, then filling it with water or slurry. Splits rock like a bastard with a relatively small boom.

  5. Daniel K Day says:

I would have liked to see what happened in the next 15 seconds after the end of #3.

  6. Macumazahn says:

    #5 – That’s gonna leave a mark.
Actually, that one is somewhat educational – I might have made the same mistake. Now, I won’t.

Play nice.
