    I always found a stair master a bit better, less chance of over extending my knee.

    I agree on the stairmaster. The less time your back spends under a pack, the less opportunity for injury. You only get 1 back in this lifetime, protect it and use it wisely. If you have to go with a ruck, then do so after reading “A Soldier’s Load and the Mobility of a Nation”, by S.L.A. Marshall. Interesting reading for anyone, especially so if you are carrying or plan to carry a pack. Here is a free .pdf from the U.S. Army:
