I tried to build a pool heater for my Dad back in the late 70’s using 1.5″ PVC painted black…..didn’t work because the volume exposed to the hot side was too small, while the volume in the pipe was to large….small, spiraling tubes that constantly expose the water to the heat work the best….I have 7 panels on my roof that heat a 15,000 gal pool just fine….sometimes too warm….I like it 82, the wife, of course, likes it 90….the cold water goes in, and you can feel the hot water in the returns in the pool….thermostat automatically cycles the unit when it reaches temperature, and also has a sensor to shut it down on cloudy days….
