I use to fish commercially out of South East Alaska (trolling), the sea lions were the worst, absolutely useless animals, can’t eat them and their hide won’t even make usable leather. Even the Eskimos didn’t have a use for them.Sometime you would get one following behind you and eating the middle out of every salmon on the lines. The best thing to do then is make sure their were no kayakers around to report you to fish and game then put a .30-06 round through the things head next time it came up for air.

My dad and I fished with a guy (he passed away quite a few years back), when I was about 6 or 7, out at Newport. I cannot recall the guy’s name and my dad has Alzheimers so he doesn’t remember even fishing with the guy. When we went crabbing he would put a couple dozen hooks into a chicken. When the seals would show up to rob the crab pots he would drop that chicken down and watch the seals come up with chicken stuck in their face. I think he used to drop containers of gunpowder for them too.

I wish some of the Indian tribes would claim them as their heritage and start killing them off.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

  9. Roger says:

That’s not uncommon in Florida offshore fishing only here its with sharks.

    • Yep had the same thing happen to me many times fishing off Key West but there it was a hammerhead shark three years in a row. We were mostly bringing in Bluefin and about one out of every 5 would be half a fish or less when we got em in. The skipper invited me up on the tower and you could watch the sharks come up behind the catch and take a bite.

There’s no getting around the Orca’s. My mom lined us up a day of fishin in Juneau a few 8 or so years back and everywhere we cast a line those things showed up. More than 6, <10. They were all bigger than the charter boat. When I realized how hard they were fishing I was really glad to be in a bigger boat.

Play nice.
