Ignorance Has Won

A society dedicated to preserving the correct use of the apostrophe has shut down because “ignorance has won”.

Retired journalist John Richards, 96, started the Apostrophe Protection Society in 2001 to make sure the “much-abused” punctuation mark was being used correctly.

But Mr Richards has now announced: “With regret I have to announce that, after some 18 years, I have decided to close the Apostrophe Protection Society.

A majority of native English speakers are functionally illiterate. In most cases, willfully so. I have ceased my attempts to educate them in favor of simple mockery, which is much more satisfying.

So where will that leave the “i” before “e” except after “c” protection service?

That one has been abandoned due to there being too many exceptions.

As well as the apostrophe, I’m also exasperated by people who can’t distinguish between there, their and they’re.

Let’s not forget then and than too.

        Affect and effect too.
I finished a book yesterday where the fucking author said oster sized instead of ostracized. I’m not kidding.

I’ve noticed that editing is a lost art. Lots of books, magazine articles, and news reports suffer from a lack of editing, but depend on Spellcheck, instead.

  6. Gotta say, I am unsurprised that the idiot’s have “won”.

Parent-teacher conference with then 12-year-old son’s teacher. I told teacher son’s spelling was horrible and that I was trying to help him at home. Teacher’s reply, “Don’t worry about it. We have spell check.”

  9. explainist says:

you did notice that the BBMFIC is 96, and he’s giving up because of 96.

What?? No longer able to listen to Zappa’s Apostrophe? Real shame, best jam ever.

Well, if you want to have some fun, watch Breitbart headlines. They really suck at punctuation. Sometimes you need to read that shit twice to figure out where they’re going with it.

  12. crazyeighter says:

We have a winner. No more calls please.

I felt ignorance had won for good when Obama got elected and then the ignorance was doubled down with his 2nd victory.
