Fight for D.C. statehood gets new push from Democrats

The D.C. statehood effort got new life Thursday, when longtime skeptic House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer threw his support behind the idea and fellow Democrats pledged hearings to advance the issue.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Committee, said he has scheduled a hearing for July 24, marking the first time in more than a quarter century that the topic has gotten that far.

This is bullshit. How are they going to fit 51 stars on the Flag?
Seriously though, Rurik brought up a good point: “This is just a gimmick to create a Rotten Borough for two additional senators, who would be Democrat guaranteed for eternity.”

Allow it and only if california is split into 3 parts. One would be the urban areas and 2 to represent the rural conservative areas.

  2. Jonathan says:

The Constitution requires a Federal District that is not part of any state – DC can’t legally become a state with it’s current borders.
The most legal option would be to shrink DC to a smaller ‘core’ district and cede the rest back to Maryland, like was done with about half of the original District back in the 1800’s to Virginia – but I doubt Maryland would agree to add a large poor city without federal assistance. And of course, as mentioned above, the real reason is to create more Democrat senators.
I’d be ok with adding more states as long as we consider other options – like splitting California, or Washington and Oregon, or Illinois; there are a number of proposals out there to increase the number of states in a balanced way.

Washington DC is a lousy district that can’t compare to even the smallest state. They have no farmland or manufacturing. They can’t manage half of their city from drugs and murderers. The other half of the city is safe because of the security provided by federal police, and security forces at the embassies and universitis. Their education system is abysmal. There is no way in hell they should be considered a state. If you want to give them Congressional representation, fine, but do it thought Maryland and Virginia as Congressional annexes.

    Otherwise, stop this foolishness.

  4. FiftycalTX says:

My county is bigger than DC. Why can’t we be a “state”? Indeed, why can’t all 254 counties in Texas, many bigger than yankee “states” be their own state?

  5. Steve_in_CA says:

    Give it back to Maryland.

  6. the other other Andrew says:

Our ancestors escaped city-states and all the infighting caused by that political structure. A state every 10-20 miles is an insane idea.

Plus, as Jonathan pointed out, the Founding Fathers all thought a city not aligned with any particular state, just for the Capital, was a good idea.

Every time we deviate away from our founding fathers’ good ideas, we (the little people) get screwed by those in power.

  7. pigpen51 says:

Typically, they add states 2 at a time, case in point, AK and HI. So if they added DC, then would they also want to add another state in just a year of two down the road? The most likely one would be Puerto Rico, which would probably be another Democratic state, with just the promise of paying off their multi billion dollar debt. So this is not even as simple as adding 2 more Senators and another Representative. Just another power grab by the Dems. There is still talk about them trying to pack the Supreme Court.

  8. Butch says:

I believe it would be easier and much more productive to just “purge all democrats” (define that as you wish) and start over.

  9. Curtis says:

The only thing to do is to force everybody who has taken up residence in the District of Columbia to move out. People can work in the District but nobody may live there except the President and his/her family.

  10. crazyeighter says:

    Fifty one? No sweat.

But yeah; solid Democrat seats forever.

  11. nonncom says:

This would clear the way for Puerto Rico to be another dem represented state and thereby end the controversy over the 51 stars on the flag…/s

  12. Zot says:

DC south of the river was made part of Virginia years ago. Time to make DC north of the river part of Maryland.
